Feedback Post, Round Three, Part One

It has been a hell of a long time since we've done one of these, we've got about nine thousand more people in the game, and it's been a rough month. Time for some love.

Here's how it works - below this post, there will be a comment each player in XProject, with notes on who they play, links to their wiki entry, links to the journals for their characters, and some helpful identifying icons. Because I think it looks cool.

This is part one. Part two is over here. Because there's a lot of us.

Also, like the last few times, Rossi is a wiki editing madwoman and has added the links to everyone's pages.

I love seeing Paige pop up - her reactions when Jay was missing-presumed-dead felt so very real and painful to me.

Sofia is still delightfully bitchy, and yet we see those little moments where you realize she doesn't hate everyone, she's just guarding herself.

Seeing Pete's decisions throughout Day Zero and then MoR were ... I'm not sure how to describe it. Conflicted and awful and horrible and yet it really read like he had no other choice but to do those things in order to do what he felt was right in the bigger picture.

You manage to keep two men who could be so similar so -very- distinct. Seeing Scott as steady reliable leader who has really grown strongly into his roles - and Nathan growing out of his and into a family man who is trying to literally change the world for the better is always awesome to read. On top of which, good lord, woman, you do more complicated plots than I can shake a stick and -- and I shake a LOT of sticks -- and they come out awesome and with character growth for as many people involved as want it!

I desperately miss Kyle and Tommy snarking at each other. Having someone Kyle can so easily be a giant jerkass at, and knowing that they'll be just as much of a jerk back is awesome fun.

Alex as 'I play dumb but when it comes to geology, I know my SHIT' and coming up with awesome ways to use his powers while still maintaining that carefree surface of "I'm just a surfer, and if I keep acting like it, I'll believe it someday. Don't ask me about Selene or my ex girlfriend the volcano" is awesome. Alex acts dumb, but the moments where you KNOW he's not are awesome.

I could not do what you have done. Taken two characters, both of whom with a history in the game, and made them your own without ... well, I can't say drastically changing them, because JAY IS BLUE, but making every moment of those changes read as 100% absolutely true to who they are and who they were. That takes amazing writing, and an amount of work and thought that I cannot imagine.

Rogue is one of the most multi-faceted characters in the game - taking her from runaway to young woman finding a place for herself, to a woman not sure where she came from and determined to find out even if it comes out WAY WRONGER than she intended - and taking that minor tiny almost invisible aspect of canon-that-could-have-been has been very fun to read.

Having Julio to play off Kyle, and keep Kyle's head from getting to big - you seem to know just when Julio is needed to come in and deflate Kyle.

Both of your two have such an intense realism when it comes to how fucked up they can be, and yet how normal they seem, and their trauma and reactions grow with them in a way that feels very naturally developed.

Despite -knowing- the outcome for Take a Bow, I was still teary-eyed at some of the logs and felt actual palatable relief when Mark came back. It takes talent to express that kind of emotion in writing.

If I knew Shiro, I would probably want to choke him to death a lot. Or hit him with sticks. You have a huge talent to make someone THAT DAMN IRRITATING and yet human and sympathetic and real. And giving me someone to have Kyle be a jerk at because Kyle broke Guy Code On Dating Your Buddy's Ex is hella fun.

There's an icon of Jan's that always says to me everything you've made her - the one where she's looking very sly and covering her mouth with her hand. "Oh, yes I was sneaky, and everyone knows it, and I know everyone knows it, and I know I'm not fooling anyone, and that was the entire point." She reads to me as very aware of who she is, what she is, and she has no problems letting people know what she thinks. Even when those people might be 20 years older than she is. She wants to -help-, she wants things to be better, and she does what she can to achieve those things.

Callie in some ways is the beacon of Normal in the midst of a bunch of teenage girls who are all CRAZY. She reads as very "Teenaged Girl" - well balanced, friendly, occasional moments of woe, but by and large a normal kid in a very weird living situation.

I am still overjoyed that you let me nerd about electrogenesis at you when you intro'd Nori. I loved seeing her finally break down during New York Minute after being so stubborn for so long, and actually start trying to learn English and be ... less abrasive (It wouldn't be Nori if she wasn't abrasive) and start to grow up.

Jumping into a group like the XForce crowd (or the Guthrie clan!) has got to be really intimidating, and you went in with both feet. Bishop fits in really well, and I like how you're playing out long-term consequences like him having absorbed some of Wanda's powers and it still causing him problems in the long run.

Sam and Jay's recent is so painful to read, I can tell they're both hurting a lot and that it's hard to cope with the things they're dealing with.

You have this ability to put so much of who Inez is into everything you have her do - her temper problems, her embarrassment about her eye and hearing issues - even the comments to her journal do this. "I'm hot, I can bench-press a Harley, and I've got cramps. Bring me my damn chocolate."

Inez and Angel's catfight, by the way, was pure comedy genius.

You have a gift for mixing politics and history and very very intense situations with dry (or absurd!) comedy that makes me love to read your logs with Farouk - and I love when we get to have our characters interact in plots.

Farouk as perpetual outsider/commenter is a great thing - he's one of the people that can be counted on to stop and point out that everyone around him is totally batshit crazy.

You've given us a young likeable Fred Dukes, and your willingness to show the less-than-attractive aspects of his power and how that affects his self-esteem - especally when surrounded by people who could honestly be underwear models. Sarah has really developed into a very balanced character - the tough fighter girl who doesn't take crap - and seeing her be vulnerable when she and Angelo broke off their friends-with-benefits relationship and seeing her reactions to Callisto have been very enjoyable to read.

You bring a richness and life to a Ororo - and that takes a lot of skill. She's so easily written WRONG and you do so much -very- right. Her relationship with Remy especally stands out - the man who is probably easily named as one of the worst possible people -ever- to love, because of his chosen life and the baggage he carries, and every log with them you can tell that she accepts who he is, and the risks that caring for a man like him means.

I love that Leonard has this air of perpetual "Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into here?" without any dismissive tone or accusations. Every time you write him, it is obvious he cares very much about the futures of the kids he is seeing, and how happy he is when some of them actually get their heads out of their butts.
