Mar. 20th, 2005 10:52 pmHi. Here's the due cheering and applause for the Thermopylae logs. Thanks you all for a very entertaining weekend!
A few things and snippets I liked particularly or noticed for some reason or the other:
* First thing, it was all around a very good job at building up anticipation over the week.
* I'm not sure why, but for me was the goodbye scene of Alison and Doug the most moving of all.
* Madelyn's "I work at a school for mutant teenagers. And believe me, it's not that different." line cracked me up.
* The repeating of the com messages from Scott and Nathan all over the logs helped a lot with understanding the timeframe of all the scenes. Very good idea.
* When Hank had to leave Valeri behind - that was sad. [Btw I remember that transformed!beast had a strong healing factor in my old Avengers comics - did Marvel drop that idea, or is it X-journal-verse specific that he has none?]
* I liked the description of how Nathan experienced the trigger.
* Sam's air battle was good and his thoughts when he went down made me laugh.
* Damn. I liked Konstantakis! I would have preferred to see her among the survivors, really.
* I was wondering - why wasn't Radonic roottriggered immediately, like the other second-gens?
* I didn't know the fire and ice poem at the start of part 8 and I like it. X_journal is so educational. :D
* I loved Cains 'taking on Director Ruiz' scene because by then I was rightfully pissed about the stunt she had pulled.
* It was cool when Xavier helped powering the Trojan horse, because I had completely forgotten about him at that point.
* Mick's death was sad! Likewise, the scene where Madelyn finds him. Stating the obvious here, I guess, but still.
[Plus, in the aftermath, Alison's scenes with Ani, Remy and Haroun and the Nathan & Moira one were very good.]

Our Doug-player had a late blaze of inspiration. *grins*

That is good to know. Because when I was cutting this beast up and assembling it for posting, all I could think was "Oh pleasepleaseplease let the timeframe make sense..." ;)
* Damn. I liked Konstantakis! I would have preferred to see her among the survivors, really.
I was torn. On the one hand, I liked her too. On the other hand, the whole precog-willingly-sacrificing-herself really appealed to me.
* I was wondering - why wasn't Radonic roottriggered immediately, like the other second-gens?
Because he... umm... had a natural resistance? (Really, it's because I unintentionally created a timing snafu and didn't catch it immediately. Hence some hasty plothole-plastering. ;)
* I loved Cains 'taking on Director Ruiz' scene because by then I was rightfully pissed about the stunt she had pulled.
You'd probably be entertained to know that there were a few of us who ran around going "Plane origami! Whee!" for days in advance of that being written... ;)
* It was cool when Xavier helped powering the Trojan horse, because I had completely forgotten about him at that point.
Stay tuned for repercussions of Nate enlisting/grabbing help with that. *enigmatic look* ;)
* Mick's death was sad! Likewise, the scene where Madelyn finds him. Stating the obvious here, I guess, but still.
I wavered for soooo long on killing Mick. Really. Came within a hair's breadth of not doing it... but it worked out too well in the end. ;)

Date: 2005-03-20 11:26 pm (UTC)I so cried reading it all. And not just because it was about 100,000 words including supplementary logs. Seriously, folks? You all rock and I'm honored to play with you.

Date: 2005-03-21 12:37 am (UTC)I loved the logs for the night before they all went into battle, it just seemed so right and I just fell in love with the characters all over again.
I loved the timing that was used, the fact that you could place what action was happening at what time, just because of what was going on over the comms. That was just so well done.
I loved the use of poetry at the beginning and end of the logs, and I esspecially loved the line from Firefly.
I agree that Mick's death was so sad and the whole part where Alison listens to him stop breathing was just so powerful and well done.
I actually think that I need to re-read all the logs before I comment any further because the whole thing just blew me away.
Really, I just want to say well done to everyone involved because I doubt I could have pulled something like that off. So, well done!

Date: 2005-03-21 01:01 am (UTC)And Alison is all about sound. It made some things happen just so very naturally, as a result of that... :) I'm looking forward to what comes of this, now. Heh!

Date: 2005-03-21 01:07 am (UTC)It was just so heartbreaking to read, and I was just trying not to cry all the way through it. Very well done.

Date: 2005-03-21 01:11 am (UTC)And I am just over the moon that the repeated com-conversations seem to have worked so well. That's what I was most worried about putting this together, I have to admit.
Romping happily through some of my favorite poems looking for good pieces to use was a blast... I only wish I could take credit for thinking of the Firefly line, though. ;)

Date: 2005-03-21 01:19 am (UTC)I loved it, it worked perfectly, and in all those logs it's nice to have a point of reference so that you know what's going on when. I probably would have got a little lost without them.
I thought the poetry was very effective, I really did love it.

Date: 2005-03-21 10:12 am (UTC)*waves her hand and grins* That would be me, I think. Consider it payback for the sniffling you put me through with all those sneak-peeks last weekend. ;)

* I was wondering - why wasn't Radonic roottriggered immediately, like the other second-gens?
Yeah, there was a boo-boo that wasn't picked up until editing late on your Friday night (I'm Australian, we're a day ahead. ;) ). And unfortunately Nightcrawler's player was unavailable for re-writing, so we had to go with the last-minute edit. There is, however, a nifty idea coming out of that which hopefully should smooth over the awkwardness. And make Kurt be less broken.
I already told Alicia this, but this plot just rocked, totally. It was a huge amount of work for her to co-ordinate, but she did it beautifully, and everyone involved did just awesome work. It was a privelege to be able to be involved in something so totally amazing.
My personal favourite bits were... well, hard to say really. It was a great combination of action, character pieces, tragedy and humour. And a lot of the most emotionally wrenching scenes were the little things - MacInnis at the end, realising he'd lost nearly all his people and wishing he had someone to comfort him; the Remy and Allison scene, which was a brilliant use of description to evoke mood, rather than dialogue; the small, human touches.
Well done, all. :)

Date: 2005-03-21 11:21 am (UTC)I never knew he'd ever *had* one... I've never read Hank in Avengers, only as an X-Man. Presumably Marvel dropped the idea for some reason. *g* Glad you liked his bits, though!

Date: 2005-03-21 02:36 pm (UTC)I can see the appeal of the precog-self-sacrifice idea, too. Also, I think a 10 second precognition must suck. Less so for witty banter in talk-shows maybe, but in a battle situation? Must be terribly stressful. Useful, of course, but I'd prefer the more mundane stuff, like shooting beams. I suspect all I would ever see is me getting beaten up because I was too busy seeing it happen.
Because he... umm... had a natural resistance?
Hee. Works for me. Or insufficient RAM has delayed the reboot.
Soooo... *looks out for the repercussions*

Date: 2005-03-21 04:34 pm (UTC)I oh so know the problem. This time, however, I did the smart thing and took a few notes on my way through the big pile of logs. Well, whenever I thought of it, anyway.

And I'm with you about the McInnis scene. I think the
asshatpoor old man desperately needs a new hobby now. And when I say 'hobby' I mean like, 'gardening', and not 'managing a team of super villains' or stuff like that.no subject
Date: 2005-03-21 04:53 pm (UTC)Thank you. It was quite fun to write and put together. Thermopylae has been one of the best opportunities for character development for a lot of folks, Cain included. :)
(yes, that's blatant foreshadowing, what of it?)

Date: 2005-03-22 02:07 am (UTC)Oh, definitely there with MacInnis needing a new cause in life. Or, you know, a life beyond guilt and retribution and being an old rat bastard.
