x_projectSo, we haven't had a meme in a while, and I was thinking of this the other day. Besides, work is driving me crazy and I need stuff to read.
Name 5 ways the XP version of your character is different from their comics or movie canon.
Amanda Sefton/Dayspring ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] vs. canon)
1) XP Amanda is a mutant. 'Cause that was/is the rule for XP characters with powers, they have to be mutants. So Amanda has the power to convert energy into magic.
2) XP Amanda didn't grow up with a German circus family - she was taken by a bad man and raised in England as a magical battery.
3) XP Amanda is not romantically involved with her adopted brother Kurt Wagner. At all. Way to be creepy there, Marvel.
4) XP Amanda is not and never has been a stewardess. She came to the school as a 16 year old street brat, under the supervision of Pete Wisdom, for training with her mutant powers and somewhere safe to keep her out of trouble.
Oops.
5) Comics Amanda also never dated Manuel de la Rocha aka Empath. XP Amanda had a fairly long-term relationship with him (about 3 years, iirc), that was fraught with drama, emotional manipulation and lots of sex.
Yvette Petrovic/Penance ([Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com] vs. canon
1) XP Penance is the daughter of an Albanian Muslim woman who was raped during the later part of the war by a Serbian soldier. Canon Yvette... isn't. I actually developed the Penance character based on early Generation X development hints, where it was intended that Penance be a Yugoslavian war survivor by the name of Yvette. I wasn't 100% comfortable with writing a religion I wasn't very familiar with, so rather than botch it, I made Yvette's mother (and Yvette, by extension), atheist following her traumatic experience and her family's response to it.
2) XP Penance was born in a Red Cross refugee camp and named by the French doctor who delivered her. Since "Yvette" isn't a Slavic name, thank you Marvel.
3) XP Penance can talk. Mostly because trying to RP her completely mute and without Artie's handy powers workaround was just too difficult to face.
4) There is no family relationship of any kind between XP Penance and the St. Croix family. Marius bought her while he was in Europe, as a 'cure' for his maladaptive mutation, and while she remains his friend, they don't consider each other family. Also, Marius isn't evil in XP. ;)
5) XP Penance doesn't have the resistance to telepathy that canon Penance/Hollow does. There didn't really seem a reason to need it.
(Extra: also, I hadn't realised this, but apparently Penance was on the list on Stryker's computer files in X2.)

Date: 2013-08-20 08:53 pm (UTC)1) Canon Skin was not, as far as I'm aware, bisexual. He certainly never dated Bevatron - or, for that matter, Husk, Marrow or Daytripper.
2) XP Skin has not, and never will, die on a cross on the mansion lawn. The nod I gave it in These Earthly Things is the closest I will ever come to doing that.
3) Canon Skin didn't have a talent for languages.
4) Canon Skin had no interest in the law except in how to avoid getting in trouble with it.
5) Canon Skin never ran his very own NGO by the age of 26. I don't think he even reached the age of 26.
Kurt Sefton/Nightcrawler:
1) Canon Kurt's surname remains Wagner. "Amanda Sefton" was only an alias Jimaine used to pretend she wasn't raised as his sister and make him go out with her. (Ick.)
2) As Rossi said, XP Kurt is not romantically involved with Amanda and there are no conceivable circumstances where that could happen.
3) XP Kurt is the son of Mystique and a German baron, and this is my final word. He is not the son of the actual devil.
4) If XP Kurt ever becomes a priest or monk, it will probably either be in old age or after some hugely traumatic and bereaving event, and it will be real. It will not be some kind of ridiculous scheme to brainwash him and make him Pope.
5) Canon Kurt never dated Jubilee or Scarlet Witch.

2. XP Angel has, sadly, never had a relationship with Vance Astrovik (I'm still holding out hope if he ever comes back though).
3. Canon Angel's mother wasn't in the picture -- she was raised by her father and paternal grandmother.
4. XP Angel wasn't trained as a potential assassin and bodyguard for the White Queen (am I the only one who finds the fact that canon Angel was kind of hilarious? Also she considered Emma a mother figure. Yup.)
5. Canon Angel never date Julio Richter or Julian Keller (what up with J's girly?).
Topaz
1. Canon Topaz worked on and off with Dr. Strange (she kept joining and leaving him).
2. XP Topaz doesn't have the ability to change her appearance (canon Topaz has two forms -- Indian and blonde European).
3. Canon Topaz wasn't English.
4. XP Topaz's real name - Vimala - was completely created just for the game. She didn't have a real name in canon.
5. XP Topaz isn't a healer.
Fun similarity -- both canon and XP Topaz were used by Taboo for his own means.

1. Tarot isn't dead in XP. In canon, she's been killed either two or three times, depending on if she's dead right now or not. Furthermore, if she is not dead at the moment in canon, my Tarot is also not a techno-zombie raised by Selene.
2. My Tarot is much more fully precognitive than canon. Canon, they mostly hinted with very little use of the precognition. In XP, I've pulled the precog into a somewhat useful if headache inducing (for me and her!) power with a whole connection to actual tarot use and mysticism. Well, by "I've" I mean I had thoughts and then threw myself upon the mercy of Dex and Rossi's brains who helped me with the Tante Mattie connection and other developments.
3. Canon Tarot certainly never dated Deadpool. or Garrison Kane. (she did have a little crush on Cypher, sort of, and there were hints of some connection with Empath I think maybe) and I'm pretty damn she she never slept with Gambit.
4. Mostly by virtue of being dead a lot, Tarot in canon's never grown up to be much of anything, except people's minions. XP Tarot's a spy and assassin.
5. In canon, Marie-Ange is the nicest of the Hellions, when she's given characterization. Nice, but on the side of the "bad guys". In XP, Marie-Ange is reserved but friendly at best, and at worst, pretty much an awful person, but she does terrible things for "good" reasons, so she's awful but on the side of good.

2) Canon Sooraya only met her mother briefly as part of a deal with the Kingmaker, while XP Sooraya knows where she is and even lived for a while with her in Afghanistan.
3)Canon Sooraya has several times scoured the flesh of people's bones. XP Sooraya abhors this idea.
4)Canon Sooraya was never involved in an NGO since shortly after coming to the United States.
5) XP Sooraya never had parts of her turned to glass.
Hope Abbott/Trance
1) Canon Hope does not have parents who wish her to confirm her to an ideal to be a lady.
2) Canon Hope does not play the violin.
3) XP Hope has never been to Limbo and has never fought real zombies.
4) Canon Hope is an X-man. XP Hope... would probably not work very well as an X-man.
5) Canon Hope rarely wears skirts? (From what I have seen)

2. Canon Matt has never had a drug problem.
3. XP Matt is not a lawyer...yet.
4. XP Matt does not know Foggy Nelson.
5. XP Matt has never had a girlfriend die or try to kill him.
Clarice Ferguson/Blink
1. Canon Clarice died in the Phalanx Covenant, sacrificing herself to save the rest of Gen X.
2. Canon Clarice never joined the X-Men.
3. Canon Clarice never became a Physicians Assistant
4. Canon Clarice was not interested in sewing/fashion/clothes.
5. Canon Clarice is not from upstate NY.
*Exiles Clarice is from AoA which is an AU of 616. Apparently Canon Clarice has been resurrected...I have no idea about any of this. None of it applies now.
ANGEL.
Date: 2013-08-21 01:35 am (UTC)1) XP!Warren was never kidnapped and turned into Death / Archangel.
2) XP!Warren is a lawyer and not a businessman.
3) XP!Warren's dad isn't dead, his mother hasn't married his uncle. His father has also not tried to create a cure for mutants using Leech.
4) XP!Warren hasn't dated/slept with Psylocke, Dazzler, Husk, Stacy X, Candy Southern, Charlotte Jones etc, and was never kidnapped by Callisto to be her lover. On the other hand, canon!Warren isn't bisexual and never dated/slept with Colossus, Icarus, Deadpool, Bevatron or Copycat.
5) XP!Warren doesn't have healing blood.
BONUS! XP!Warren hasn't fathered the Apocalypse Twins. (... really wtf Marvel.)
MAGMA.

2) XP!Amara has never been to Asgard or Limbo.
3) XP!Amara has never been romantically involved with Empath, and canon!Amara was never romantically involved with Pyro (though she does become romantically involved with a mutant with similar powers to her who dies as a result of Decimation).
4) In canon, the Alison Crestmere identity is revealed to be a fake, whereas in XP it is Amara's original identity.
5) XP!Amara has never turned Sooraya into glass.

2. XP Clint's father wasn't an alcoholic or abusive.
3. XP Clint did not run away from an orphanage with his older brother to join the circus.
4. XP Clint has not (and will never - sadface) partnered up with Black Widow.
5. XP Clint is a mutant, whereas his canon counterpart is not.
Wade Wilson aka Deadpool (
1. XP Wade's healing factor was not derived from Wolverine's, nor was it implanted during his time with Weapon-X. Rather, he was always a mutant, he'd just never manifested. Weapon-X forced XP Wade's healing factor to manifest.
2. XP Wade is not immune to telepathic reading.
3. XP Wade is not horribly scarred due to the interaction of his healing factor and his cancer. Rather, his cancer in XP is a form of leukemia, which doesn't directly impact his outward appearance.
4. XP Wade has not (and will never) time travel, nor will he ever possess a teleportation device in the form of a convenient wrist-watch-y doodad.
5. XP Wade doesn't use swords in combat, preferring smaller bladed weapons or guns.

1. Canon Doug was dead for a long long time because writers were lazy and couldn't think of anything interesting to do with him. While XP Doug has gone to code...a few times but never been permanently dead.
2. XP Doug has never had an alien BFF or the TO virus.
3. Canon Doug was never to my knowledge involved with the Hellfire Club except as it related to the NM rivalry with the Hellions. Certainly he was never Emma's White Knight.
4. Canon Doug has appeared with the canon version of X-Force, but has never been an international superspy.
Jean-Phillipe Colbert/Bevatron
1. Canon Bevatron is not Marie-Ange's cousin.
2. Canon Bevatron's name is fundamentally ridiculous.
3. Jean-Phillipe was never a Hellion. Canon Bevatron did not work for the Brotherhood.
4. Canon Bevatron's behavior in Necrosha (banding together with Beef to harass Doug) suggests something of a fratboy jock mentality. Jean-Phillipe is definitely NOT like that.

Really, the only similarities to canon besides being Emma's sister and her powers are the fact she was a businesswoman and that she had her husband killed.
XP Catseye
1. Not taken in and raised by Emma.
2. Not killed to fuel a teleportation portal and then resurrected. (As of yet, at least...)
3. Does not possess a human-panther hybrid (werecat) form (As of yet, at least...)
4. Not a human lie detector.
5. Cannot crawl up walls.

2.) Canon Jean didn't have dissociative identity disorder that manifested in a secondary personalty.
3.) XP Jean wasn't a model (seriously every woman in the 60s worked as a model or something)
4.) The Daysprings are not related to Jean in the XP universe.
5.) XP Jean has not had a school named after her.
6.) XP Jean has not (to my knowledge) consumed an entire solar system, killing billions of beings.

5) XP!Lorna wasn't permanently bonded with Malice.
Tandy Bowen/Dagger
1) XP!Tandy is a mutant, in some comics she appears as a latent mutant or she was injected with Light Force to get her powers.
2) XP!Tandy never went to war on Drugs.
3) Canon Tandy's parents never were murdered by her father [they are still alive]. XP!Tandy's Guardians are her Uncle and Adrienne Frost.
4) XP!Tandy hasn't killed anyone [yet].
5) XP!Tandy doesn't have her counterpart, Cloak.

2) Canon Remy is close friends with Ororo after rescuing her following the Seige Perilous. The pair have never been in a romantic relationship together. XP Remy became close friends with Ororo following several missions and eventually became a couple, marrying in 2011.
3) Canon Remy was once a Horseman of Apocalypse. XP Remy has knocked off a pair of Apocalypse's Horseman and is unlikely to ever be turned to his side.
4) Canon Remy had a long and complex on-again/off-again romantic relationship with Rogue. XP Remy initially detested Rogue, although they eventually became friends and allies. There has never been any hints of romantic interest between them.
5) Canon Remy, despite a checkered past, is generally considered to have been a moral man. XP Remy was a sadistic monster who was only stopped by the scrubbing of his personality and 20 years of experiences.
Garrison Kane/Dominion
1) Canon Kane was part of the Weapon-X project. XP Kane never was.
2) Canon Kane worked for Cable until an explosion made him a quadraplegic. XP Kane has no association with Cable beyond the X-Men and has all his limbs, although his right arm was surgically rebuilt by Essex.
3) Canon Kane fought for Cable in the 40th Century with upgraded future technology. XP Kane has never been closer to the 40th Century than Futurama DVDs, which he once upgraded to blu-ray
4) Canon Kane has the personality of damp cardboard. XP Kane has a personality mostly stolen from Ryan Reynolds films, Canadian stereotypes, and too much baseball.
5) Canon Kane was once romantically linked to Copycat while working at a community theatre. XP Kane was almost romantically linked to Copycat and can't find the community theatre without his GPS.

XP Artie's dad never experimented Beast.
XP Artie isn't 9 for ever and ever and ever.
XP Artie is a spy in training.
XP Ricochet was never an active super hero.(Yet.)
XP Ricochet doesn't use frisbees as weapons.
XP Ricochet isn't in an ex-superheroes support group.
I can't think of any more than that.

3) XP Billy's powers convert chaos energy into magic allowing him to warp reality to varying degrees of success. Canon Billy's powers...do whatever the writers feel like on any given day. (So I guess the reason this is different is that I've defined WHY that happens.)
4) XP Billy's lightning power is rooted in his spells, and he can't fly (yet). Canon Billy essentially has two sets of powers: his Thor-like set and his magic set.
5) XP Billy doesn't have a hot, shape-shifting alien boyfriend.

5) XP Jubes was never Wolverine's side kick.

Date: 2013-08-29 04:53 pm (UTC)1) Canon Rachel is the daughter of Scott Summers and Jean Grey from an alternative future. XP Rachel is the daughter of Nathan Dayspring (not a Summers) and Moira MacTaggart.
2) XP Rachel is technically 8 years old, but due to Essex's manipulations, she "grew up" in a bubble in the astral plane and returned as a nineteen year old. Canon Rachel grew up in the alternative future before travelling to the past and deciding to stay.
3) Canon Rachel took the code name "Phoenix" in honour of her dead mother and was a host for the Phoenix Force. There is no Phoenix Force in XP and Rachel's mother Moira is very much alive. So is Jean.
4) Canon Rachel was part of the Excalibur team with Shadowcat, Daytripper, Meggan and Nightcrawler. XP Rachel only met Shadowcat as a baby, hasn't been seen on-screen with Daytripper or Meggan yet, and was trained as an X-Man partly by her world's version of Kurt.
5) Canon Rachel has the permanent scars/tattoos on her face from when she was made a Hound. XP Rachel's face is unmarred.
