Warning, because I suspect I will get lynched if I don't put a warning on this one...

(There's actually a happier one that also wants to be written, too, but this one was making me tear up in class so I had to get it out and get on with life for a bit.)

When Scott died, Jean gave up. She made it through the funeral, barely talking to anyone, and the next morning she was gone. Charles said she needed space, needed time, and that if they let her be she would come back when she was ready. It was one of the few times he was ever really wrong.

Unsurprisingly, in the end it was Elisabeth who found her. The look of disdain on her face as she entered the dive was unmistakable, but the other patrons ignored her as if they couldn't even see her. She didn't look up as the glass of water was placed on the table, just said, "Canada is too cold."

"I like the cold," the redhead answered.

"Do you know how many Jane Smiths there are in this city?" Betsy asked.

"One more than there used to be."

Finally Betsy looked up, scowling. "You're such a coward," she said. "When you died, he didn't give up."

"He was stronger than I am." Her eyes were dead as she met Elisabeth's glare and as she turned away the other woman grabbed her wrist.

"How dare you, Jean?" she snarled. "How dare you... insult his memory like this? Run away from it? From everything?"

Ripping out of Betsy's grip, Jane slapped her. "Don't call me that. Jean Grey is dead."
