May. 14th, 2007 08:51 pm"Ahab" was excellent so far (I'm not sure if everything is wrapped up now). The atmosphere was so consistently scary and grim and urgently, no matter where the logs played. Best parts for me were
#the 'Nathan & Ororo halve a bomb' scene for outstanding coolness,
#the 'Jean & Forge & Essex' log for containing Essex and all the references to his old history with the school
#the 'Scott & Rahne and the saxophone' for being so poetic in the final line, and
#the whole 'Jenny-repair time with Jim' log for making me cry a lot and for pure awesomeness. I can't believe that these mindscape logs became my favorite piece of X-journal, but they totally did.

Hee, I hope this isn't praise overdose or something. But then again I didn't say anything about Jenny on that meme some time back, so it's only fair. :)

Date: 2007-05-16 02:33 pm (UTC)Jim's astral chainsmoking was something I lifted from Haller's mother Gaby in New Mutants canon. Despite being completely cut off from the real world, she persisted smoking all through being trapped in her kid's brain. In XP it's a Jemail habit; Jem was the one who learned to use telepathy, so that's sort of who Haller defaults to on the astral plane. It was also the only habit Jemail could keep all those years he was locked in Haller's brain, and it tends to reemerge whenever Haller is engaging in or having conversations about reconstructive telepathy. David's the more intuitive half, but Jem's the one who developed the technical skill and has the real tenacity. The smoking is a bit of a symbol of balance, since none of David or his alters do themselves.
Although there's always the odd log where Jim forgets who he is in mid-drag and chokes.
