Point of order - everything that happened to Doug in canon was his own damn fault. The New Mutants weren't SUPPOSED to be going out and rescuing people or fighting supervillains. When Doug got shot, Magneto had explicitly forbidden them to leave the mansion due to all the troubles going on.

Granted, Doug got basically cashiered into the school to have someone who could speak to Warlock, but everything from there on was his own fault.

A late-discovered quality of the X-gene turns out to be a peculiar attraction for a previously unknown subatomic/force-transmitting particle known as a troublon. High concentrations of troublons lead to increased adventuring, violence, bending of the laws of probability, and witty banter no real person would come up with under stress.
